The Weaving Women of Santo Tomas Jalieza was formed from a collective vision. Women throughout the community wanted to share their unique textiles with customers and receive more work by equally distributing their income amongst one another. They also wanted to help provide for their families and at the same time work to preserve their Zapotec traditions. Over fourty women now work within the co-operative with many being generations of the same family. Many of the co-op's members weave at home while they look after their children, this gives them the freedom to earn an income while also caring for their families.
The Weaving Women of Santo Tomas Jalieza create each design by hand on a backstrap loom and sewing machine. Their traditional technique is what sets them apart, as they weave intricate patterns with raised threads that have a beautifully textured feel. They love to weave with bold colours and each handwoven textile is transformed into a belt, bag or table runner.
This remarkable group of women sell their stunning designs at their cooperative building and at local fairs and stores. They also partner with businesses like ours to reach a wider market and receive a more sustainable income. We have been working with Evelia and her team since 2016 and since have create a collection of our own designs in different colour ways. We are so proud to share them with you as they are truly special pieces.
