Our Sierra Collection Is Here!
Introducing our new Sierra Collection… three months in the making! That is three months of spinning thread, weaving, sewing and creating pom poms or tassels. The Sierra Collection was hand crafted by two artisan groups from Mexico; The Weaving Women of Santo Tomas Jalieza in Oaxaca and members of the Jolom Mayaetik Weaving Cooperative in San Cristobal de las Casas. The collection includes practical designs that are beautifully unique, eye catching pieces for the home that create splashes of colour and warmth and gifts that will light up someone’s day.
The creation process began here in Australia, where I drew up colour concepts to apply to specific designs. Moacir translated our ideas to the 2 groups on the phone via Whatsapp and visually through email. Once we were all on the same page, our artisan partners brought each colour concept to life in their stunning designs. We are so excited to share them with you!
Firstly we have our Jalieza Clutches! For those of you who have been following us for a while, you will know that these are some of our most popular pieces. The Weaving Women of Santo Tomas Jalieza wove each one on a backstrap loom and women from the Jolom Mayaetik Co-op created colour matching pom poms for added beauty. These designs are perfect for holding your keys, wallet, phone and any necessities! There are colours for everyone!
Next we have our Jalieza Shoulder Bags. When we visited the Weaving Women of Santo Tomas Jalieza last year, we were blown away by the texture on these beauties. We wanted to showcase this by creating colour block designs that are simple yet completely stunning. The Jolom Mayaetik Co-op also created the beautiful tassels for added colour! These designs are perfect for every day, work, university, the beach or simply popping down the road. There are a range of colours available!
Because you really can't have enough ethically made bags... we have restocked our Raya Shoulder Bag! The Jolom Mayaetik Co-op wove each design in new colours. The colours showcase the stripes and hammock straps perfectly! The Raya Shoulder Bag is a design for everyday and can also make a great beach bag.
Continuing the bolsa (bag) theme we have going... we have also restocked our El Mar Net Bag in a new natural design! Big thanks to Jose Lopez Perez and his family for creating each one! The El Mar Net Bags are incredibly difficult to make as they are all handwoven using natural maguey fibre. Read more about the creative process on our website! The design is perfect for the farmers markets, the beach or simply every day! The maguey fibre extends wide to fit a cardigan, towel or an abundance of fruit.
We also have a new design to show you! Here are our Sierra Wool Shawls! Handwoven by Manuela Diaz Perez and Marcela Hernandez Diaz from the Jolom Mayaetik Co-op, these practical designs will last a lifetime. They are perfect for windy walks along the beach and those days when the weather is unpredictable. In the warmer months the designs can add texture to a room. They look stunning hanging on a wall or draped over your favourite chair.
Now that we are on the subject of home decor... say hello to our collection of pom poms! Our Corazon and Flor pom poms have been restocked, thanks to the Jolom Mayaetik Co-op. We also have a new Pom Pom Tassel design that looks great hanging on door knobs, walls or attached to baskets. They make special gifts and can add much needed colour to any room.
